Crysis PC Game - News: New Crysis Details Emerge from GC 2007

As part of a community Q&A held at GC 2007, Bernd Diemer, Cryteks Lead Designer, has answered a whole lot of questions which have revealed new details on Crysis and other Crytek ventures. CryEdit.net originally posted some videos of the Q&A which of course were in German. Crysis-HQ hosted them before CrysisNews.de summed them up in writing. Here is 'german-to-english translation'.

  • VOIP will be a feature in Multiplayer. In some of the videos from GC 2007, there was a VOIP toggle setting visible in the options menu, so some of you would have already known this.

  • The weather in singleplayer is somewhat scripted. For example, going to a certain part of a level may trigger a change of weather or certain natural disaster.

  • The Day/Night in multiplayer can either be controlled by the server admin, or set to change dynamically.

  • As mentioned before in earlier videos and interviews, statistics will not be peristant. So if the map changes on the server, your stats for the last map will be reset as you'll be commencing a new game. (seems fair)

  • DX9 and DX10 players can play on the same server. Apparently the server takes care of it all, but I imagine those with DX10 won't receive the DX10 only benefits while playing online with DX9 players. So from what I gather, there will still be DX10 only servers.

  • DX10 servers will be put under more load than DX9 servers. This is most likely due to the extra interactivity and destructibility in DX10, and possible because Vista will be required to run a DX10 server.

  • Natural disasters can be controlled manually by server admins.

  • Crytek still aren't revealing any new information on the public beta.

  • Other Crytek games are currently in development. Keeping tradition, they will also contain the word 'Cry' somewhere in their name. Crytek's Budapest and Kiev studios will assist in the development of these upcoming titles.

  • Apparently the nanosuit can't be disabled in-game. But can most likely be removed by modders. I can't imagine Obsidian Edge 2 with a nano-suit.

  • The destructible vegetation can be modified by experienced modders, so I guess the technology behind the breakable trees could be applied to other objects.

  • German gamers won't be receiving a cut-down version of Crysis; Crytek have opted for the 18+ rating instead.

Crysis PC Game - Super-Uber-Mega Crysis Trailer

Gametrailers have managed to get the exclusive rights to a new super-uber-mega Crysis trailer which was leaked from GC 2007 in the form of an off-screen video a fews days ago (GameVideos.com since removed it). Who better to be given an exclusive HD trailer than GameTrailers.com who are well known for their very low bitrate HD videos. A 2 minute 1280x720 video shouldn't be smaller than 100mb. You gotta love that pixelation :-)

Crysis PC Game - News Digest

A year's passed by already, and once again, the onslaught beings. First of all, EuroGamer who earlier published their 'exclusive trip to Crytek studios' story, have now added another video. The unique thing about this video is it shows actual real-time gameplay from within the ice sphere, unlike all other previous glimpses. This video really will get your juices flowing.

Go to EuroGamer

To keep those juices pumping through your body and spraying all over the place, GameVideos have also got a video. Although it's not direct-feed, it's quite incredible. It shows a trailer being screened at GDC which has let's say some close-up nano-suit action. This is definitely the slickest trailer so far from Crytek.

Go to GameVideos

Last but not least is Gamespot. Although they haven't got any new videos, they've got the first screenshots from the first level of Crysis. They've also got a report from GDC which includes some nice information. Crysis sure is looking hot... it's got to be at least 30 degrees celcius on that island.

In other news, Crytek have reworked their existing, out-dated website. The new site obviously looks a lot better than the old one and also includes a nice 3D flash-based navigation pane which is a very nice touch. On top of that, there's also a new CryENGINE2 trailer which you can all engine. Have a look around, you'll probably find some stuff you haven't seen before.

Note: The Crytek website seems to be experiencing some technical difficulties every now and again. So just be patient.

Crysis - Game Information - Multiplayer

Up to 32 players will be able to go head-on in Crysis multiplayer. It will be consisted of 3 different modes:

  • Tactical Deathmatch
  • Tactical Team Deathmatch
  • Power Struggle

Tactical Capture The Flag is no longer part of the game mode line up. Crytek employees have commented though that this multiplayer mode could be added in a patch or if not, it will no doubt be developed by the modding community.

Crysis CryTek - Multiplayer Map

Both Tactical Deathmatch and Tactical Team Deathmatch are self explanatory with Deathmatch being a free for all kill for score based game, and Team Deathmatch being deathmatch with teams. The 2 modes are familiar, yet include a twist. Tactical precedes the name due to the dynamics of customizing your suit, weapons, and ammunition. As an example in Tactical Team Deathmatch, you can either shoot down an enemy helicopter or put the pilot to sleep.

Power Struggle: All players start the game on one of two teams (the U.S. Delta Force or the North Korean Army) with nothing more than a pistol and a basic nano-suit. After the players have joined a team, they will fight to earn points. These points are more than cosmetic; Points are used to purchase weapons, vehicles and even entire manufacturing plants. How one earns points will depend on what type/rank of player they have killed. For example, if a beginner defeats a general, then they will receive more points than if the general had killed the beginner. Weapons may be taken from the corpses of dead opponents and team mates, and vehicles can be stolen from the opposing side with the use of lockpicks, giving underdog players a chance to compete with enemies who are able to buy more advanced equipment.

Each game in "Power Struggle" mode can last over 10 hours (5 simulated days) although the average game lasts for about 45 minutes. Players may crossbreed vehicles with alien technologies if they bring the technology back to their base from one of several alien crash sites randomly generated on the map. Thus, one can create an invisible tank or a jeep that has a mounted freeze gun rather than a standard machine gun. Players can buy weapons from where you spawn or at certain control points amongst the map. However, should the player die, they will lose their guns and any of their vehicles, assuming their vehicle had been destroyed or stolen when they perished.

Crysis - Game Information - Enemies

North Koreans - When the player arrives on the island, North Koreans and other armed personnel arrive to secure the crash site. Crysis CryTek - Korean soldierJake goes through several soldiers to find the alien ship. When it opens up and "flash-freezes" the island, most of the soldiers die. As the story progresses, the North Koreans and the Americans form a mutual agreement to formulate a retaliation effort against the aliens.

Hunters - A large 4-legged mecha which emits terrifying sounds similar to the Tripod from The War of the Worlds, and is armed with huge iceguns. The Hunters can be seen picking up vehicles or nearby aircraft and hurling them at the enemy. They release small tentacled creatures that also possess icicle guns. It has been revealed that despite its size, the Hunter is only the second-largest creature in the game.
Crysis CryTek - Alien creatures
Scout - A small flying alien vehicle capable of air-lifting a larger non-flying alien vehicle named the 'Hunter'.

Trooper - A flying robotic unit, with no alien pilot. This unit is commonly mistaken as the aliens themselves. The trooper is the smallest alien machine in Crysis.

A larger alien vehicle exists. Its size is said to be several times that of the hunters and is able to transport them.

Animals - It's uncertain what animals will be in Crysis and how many will be able to attack the player. Sharks have been seen in trailers for the game and it has been revealed that they'll help prevent the player from swimming too far out to sea.

Crysis - Game Information - Weapons Modification

Crysis features a unique, real time, on the fly weapon modification system. This allows you to add attachments to your weapon at any point in the game, whether you're hiding behind a tree or jumping over a Jeep coming at you at 75 MPH. Here you'll find information on these weapon modifications.

Weapon modifications in Crysis can be done to almost every weapon with the only current known exclusion being the LAW Rocket Launcher.

Scope Modifications

Ironsights: Ironsights are just looking down the barrel of your gun through the metal (iron) targeting apparatus. This is ideal for close range combat but ineffective at long distances.
Reflex Sight: This is a medium range scope that emits a bright red dot informing you of where your bullets will land. It is has not yet been seen if this scope can zoom in.
Precision Scope: This is a long range scope, perfect for sniping. It offers 4x and 10x zoom to the player. As well, it provide the player with the distance in meters between the player and whatever the scope is looking at. The reticule is an upwards point arrow like this ^.
Assault Scope: This is another medium range scope that provides you with a crosshair so you know where to shoot. It is unknown if this scope can zoom in.

Tip Modifications

Silencer: This allows the player to quiet the sound of the bullets exiting their gun. This is used when a player wishes to use stealth to complete an objective and not inform surrounding enemies of a kill.

Front End Modifications

Flashlight: The flashlight is procured to the front of the gun allowing the player to see ahead of themselves during the night or dark situations.
Laser Pointer: This adds a laser pointer to the front of the gun, enabling the player to see where their gun is pointed when it is not using a scope modification. This can also be used with a scope to provide better accuracy. However enemies will be able to see this and can be notified of a player's presence.

Barrel Modifications

Tranquilizer Attachment: This adds a tranquilizer addition to your barrel, allowing you to fire tranquilizer darts. When a target is hit by these darts they will fall asleep.
Grenade Launcher Attachment: This allows a gun to fire grenades from beneath the barrel. It is not known if other grenades besides explosive grenades can be used with this attachment.

Crysis - Game Information - Weapons

Crysis provides the player with a large array of weapons to use against the enemy. Listed below are the currently known Delta Force, North Korean, and Alien weapons.

Crysis CryTek - Delta Force in NanoSuite
Delta Force Weapons
  • Hands: Several videos show the character being able to lift several very heavy objects (like large metal sheets, bins and dumpsters) and hurl them across a distance, if the player increases the strength of his suit. Hand-to-hand combat is also seen, with the strength modifier being used to punch enemies into submission. Another video showed the ability to capture an enemy by the neck and use him as a human shield while still being able to use your weapon. With the strength modifier, it's also possible to punch through different materials (like wood and sheet metal) so going through walls becomes quite easy

  • SCAR/MACs Assault Rifle: The SCAR (SOF Combat Assault Rifle) - Also referred to as the MACS Assault Rifle at GC 2006, is the standard assault rifle in Crysis, which can be modified into a light, but fast firing sniper rifle or a CQB rifle. It can also be loaded with special ammunition such as incendiary rounds, "tag" bullets that carry a transmitter to allow you to track the location of an enemy, remotely-triggered tranquilizers that will knock the enemy out instantly, as well as explosive remotely-triggered rounds. It should be noted that the in-game weapon is much closer in appearance to the XM8 than the FN SCAR.

  • LAW (XM102) Rocket Launcher: This shoulder mounted rocket launcher is able to destroy tanks, helicopters, and vehicles using futuristic targeting technology. Has 3 different types of ammo: unguided "dumb" missiles, heat seaking missles, and player guided missles.

  • XM2014 Shotgun: This standard shotgun can be modified to include a reflex sight, targeting laser or tactical flashlight.

  • MPXA Submachine Gun: This is a short range submachine gun also able to be modified to include a laser targeting system, reflex sight, tactical flashlight, and silencer.

  • GK8 Gauss Rifle: This is a high powered Gauss rifle that can be used effectively as both a mid and long range weapon.

  • DSG1 Sniper Rifle: This long range electromagnetic rifle fires metal slugs at a speed of 8 times the speed of sound (Mach 8). The developers call this weapon the "Anti-Vehicle Rifle". It can penetrate any wall or object. This is the primary sniper of the game.

  • SOCOM Pistol: This is the standard issue Delta Force Pistol.

  • Grenades:
    • Fragmentation Grenade: Fragmentation grenade that the player carries most of the time.
    • Smoke Grenades: Standard smoke grenades that fill a small area with smoke.
    • Flashbangs: Grenades that cause no damage but that temporarily make all in its radius blind and deaf.
    • Grenade Launchers: There currently two types of grenade launchers. The first are ones that can be modularized and equipped to many of the game's weapons. Currently only footage of them attached to assault rifles such as the SCAR has been shown but it may be possible to attach them to other weapons as most attachments can be put on almost all weapons, such as a sniper scope on a shotgun. The second is a nuclear grenade launcher. Little is known about this weapon other than it is acquired late in the single player campaign.

  • C4: Remote explosive charge that can be placed on a surface and detonated by the player.

  • Anti-tank Mine: Mines that can be placed on the ground. Useful for setting traps or protecting important areas from enemy vehicles.

  • Claymore: Mines that are used for protecting areas or setting traps, works aganist infantry but not vehicles.

  • Hand-Held Gatling Gun: Heavy weapon which can only be used if the player has a maximum level of strength in his suit.

  • Binoculars: Special binoculars that allow you to zoom in on enemies from far away distances or "tag" them so that they show up on your radar.

  • Airstrikes: While not a weapon able to be carried the player gains the ability to call in airstrikes later in the game.

North Korean Weapons
  • FY71 Assault Rifle: This is the primary weapon of the North Korean infantry and is basically the Korean version of the SCAR.

  • Precision Rifle: This is the Korean version of the DSG1 sniper rifle.

Alien Weapons
  • Molecular Accelerator: Used by the small multi-tentacled aliens, this weapon allows them to freeze the water and humidity from the air into icicles and hurl them at fast speeds. Due to its nature, the weapon has unlimited ammunition.

  • Molecular Arrestor: Used by the Hunters. Huge ice guns that fire a freezing ray at the enemy. The frozen target(s) can be shattered easily by bullets.

  • Singularity Cannon: Used by the aliens, this weapon shoots a "black hole" creating a large explosion that will attempt to suck anything into it.

Crysis - System Requirements

Source: Crysis-Online

Crysis will no doubt be a fairly demanding game. It will require a good system to perform well. However, CryEngine2 is very scalable so lower end machines will still stand a chance.

Here is a list of confirmed information...
  • Crysis will run on both DX9 & DX10 as well as Windows XP and Windows Vista.
  • A graphics card that supports Shader Model 2 or higher is required.
  • CryEngine2 is estimated to scale back 2 years, and scale ahead 1.5 years.
  • A single 7800GTX will run the game quite well on fairly high settings according to Crysis Art Director, Michael Khaimzon.
  • Jack Mamais of Crytek said in an exclusive Crysis-Online interview that his X1900XT runs the game very well at reasonably high settings ( still unoptmized ).
  • Crysis will dynamically utilize all processing threads available. Meaning quad-core processors will be supported.
The following specs are estimates made by myself based on the above mentioned information and other sources. These estimates are NOT official - but are based on official information.

Minimum Requirements
CPU: Athlon 64 3000+/Intel 2.8ghz
Graphics: Nvidia 6600 or ATI X1600 - Shader Model 2.0
RAM: 1GB
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 256k+
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX9 with Windows XP / Vista

Recommended Requirements
CPU: Dual-Core CPU (Athlon X2 / Pentium D / Core 2 Duo)
Graphics: Nvidia 7800 or ATI X1800 (SM 3.0)
RAM: 1.5GB+
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 512k+ (128k+ upstream)
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX9 with Windows XP / Vista

Once again, these are estimates only and are no way official. I just want to make sure that is as clear as possible. Keep in mind that Crysis is still a few months away from release, so the hardware making up the minimum specs will be more ore less three years old by that time.

I will update this page as more accurate information becomes available. Until then, this is the best reference available.

Crysis PC Game - News: Crytek Partner Up with GameSpy

GameSpy have just announced details on their involvement in the development of Crysis, including the technologies and features they will be bringing into Crysis. Those technologies include...

  • GameSpy's "Comrade" in-game middle-ware and desktop technology that enables seamless in-game to out-of-game community features, such as instant messaging, friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities.

  • GameSpy's "Sake" will allow Crytek to store data securely online, enabling gamers to build extensive player profiles and maintain game stats.

  • GameSpy's "ATLAS" allowing Crytek to easily create an advanced statistical system for competitions within the game and on the Crysis Web site.

  • So it seems Crysis will have an online stats system of some sort. It's also been announced that the Crysis beta will be made available on fileplanet. It's unknown if this means a paid subscription to fileplanet will be required. More details will be released on that soon.

Crysis PC Game - News: Australia to Receive Crysis First

In a press release sent out by EA, it's been confirmed that the Australian and New Zealand release date for Crysis is one day earlier than that of Europe and North America. The press release reads as follows...

Sydney, Australia – August 3, 2007 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Crytek, award-winning developers of Far Cry, today announced that Crysis (TM), will be hitting retail stores in North America and Europe on November 16, 2007, and in Australia on November 15, 2007 exclusively for the PC. A technical achievement featuring stunning DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 visuals, cunning gameplay, and an epic story, Crysis is one of the most anticipated PC games and first person shooters of 2007.

This is odd not only because Australia and New Zealand usually receive games later, but also because they have a timezone advantage. Theoretically, Australia will be playing Crysis almost 2 days before North America.

Crysis PC Game - Theatrical Crysis Trailer in HD

Not too long ago, Gamespot published the very first theatrical Crysis trailer. Unfortunately though, only paid subscribers got to view the HD version. CryTek have been kind enough to make this trailer available to the public in HD. The better news is that it's in even better quality than the version over at Gamespot, so even Gamespot subscribers will benefit from downloading and watching this version. Enjoy!
